You take the photo,
Karbi does the counting.

Carbs and absorption time. From one photo.

A carb-counting diary. Get estimates for carbohydrate, fat, protein, calories and absorption time. Check the values, correct them if needed, and save.

Counting calories or carbs? In calorie mode, the diary and the statistics show everything in calories.

Take the photo, check it, save it

That is the daily routine. You always approve the estimate yourself, and you can change it before it goes into the diary.

  1. Take the photo

One picture of the food on the plate. No scales, and no searching through a database.

From photo to result, at real speed
  2. Check the values

You can edit the estimate and choose how much of the dish you ate. When Karbi is unsure, it says so and shows a rounded, approximate number.

  3. Save it to the diary

The entry goes into that day's diary and counts towards the daily budget and weekly statistics.

The absorption time is part of the estimate

For every entry, Karbi estimates a short, medium or long absorption time. The category depends on the food's composition: how much fat and protein it contains alongside carbohydrate. There is no category below ten grams of carbohydrate.

You can also log packaged products by search or barcode

Karbi's database holds more than 3 million products, and the search ranks products sold in Hungary first. If a product is missing, photograph its nutrition label: the values go into your entry, and the product joins the shared database. Karbi marks products other people submitted.

Search by name
Use the matching product's nutrition values for your entry.
Barcode
Scan the barcode and Karbi looks up the product in the database.
Nutrition label
If the product is missing from the database, photograph its nutrition label: Karbi reads the values for your diary entry.
Amount
Enter the amount in grams or portions, and Karbi recalculates the values accordingly.

Everything stays after the photo

Log your meals, follow your daily carb or calorie budget, check your statistics, and export your log as CSV, or as PDF with the subscription.

I live with diabetes and build for the community

I have type 1 diabetes, I count carbohydrate every day, and I use Karbi myself. I build it for the Hungarian diabetes community: after a meal photo, you review the estimate instead of calculating the carbohydrate content from a table. The same photo gives calories too, so it also works for anyone who tracks their calorie intake.

The 542 survey responses from the Hungarian community confirmed the need for a carbohydrate estimation app. If there is something you wish it had, send me an e-mail. I read every one.

The photo result is an estimate, so always check it. Karbi is not a medical device.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the estimate?

Karbi compares two evaluations: if they agree, you get one number; if not, you get a rounded, approximate number and a "Worth a look" notice. The cases where the estimate is less certain are on the limits page: Limits of the estimate

Is Karbi a medical device?

The photo result is an estimate, so always check it. Karbi is not a medical device. It gives nutrition data: carbohydrate, fat, protein, calories, and a short, medium or long absorption time. Limits of the estimate

Which foods does it work with?

You can use Karbi for any food: a home-cooked dish, a canteen portion or a restaurant plate. For a packaged product you can scan the barcode for free (or photograph its nutrition label if the product is missing from the database), which gives you the data from the producer instead of an estimate. What the photo does not show, such as ingredients under a sauce or parts not visible in the picture, Karbi cannot see either, so the estimate can be inaccurate.

What does it cost?

The free package has the diary, the daily budget and statistics, and scanning packaged products by barcode is free as well. If a product is missing from the database, you add it by photographing its nutrition label. Estimating a plate from a photo is part of the Karbi Photo subscription, but you can try it: 3 estimates without an account, 5 more with one, and the subscription starts with a 7-day free trial that then renews until you cancel. Prices are on the plan cards: What each package includes

Will there be an iPhone version?

Karbi is currently available on Android only. I keep working on Karbi, and an iPhone version could follow if there is enough interest. If you have an iPhone and are interested in the app, write to .

What happens to my data?

You can log without an account. Karbi does not keep the photo sent for an estimate after the response. It syncs to the cloud only if you turn that on separately. Details of how your data is handled: Privacy notice
